Thick Girl for Life:Trying to keep my SKIN in Thickness

Skin is so layered. In fact, the skin has five beautiful divinely conceptualized layers. I will just give you the run down of these layers really quickly, from the bottom to top, we have the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidim and stratum corneum. I know that is a lot to say. Here is a visual to help you a little better and keep you informed as the conversation continues...

Just like we have little things we can do to keep our bodies nice and "thick" there are key players that keep our skin thick. It is better to go through this life with thick skin believe me and you! And let me tell you, thick skin is not just because someone may say something mean to you.

All skin is not created equal: its thickness varies naturally among all areas of the body. Thickness can also be affected by age, gender, and habits (like smoking) that can change the cells' elasticity and other traits. According to Patel, the skin on the soles of your feet is up to seven times thicker than the skin of your eyelids. And baby that's irrelevant of your recent pedicure too pooh. Calluses aside be happy for thick skin. Thick skin is attributed to the Dermis. Sounds familiar right?

The dermis is filled with fibers called elastin and collagen. Sounds even more familiar. Yes! You will see collagen induced products everywhere from drink powders to topical skincare items. These are the girls that keep the skin THICK! Why is that so important you may wonder, well if you look at the above graphic depicting younger skin and older skin, you will notice some differences. Unfortunately, as we age one the things that happen is the fibers of collagen and elastin get weaker and the fats in the skin disappear. This results in a thinner skin. It will be harder for this kind of skin to keep moisture and in turn the skin will droop and sag. Do not think this is an issue solely for vanity purposes.

Your skin is your first line of defense and your sole protector as you navigate throughout this world. Your skin is a hardworking and often time very neglected organ. It really upsets me and my home girls that more people are not literate on skin care and health especially holistically. The skins most important function is to be a barrier protecting all that is inside of you from mechanical impacts and pressures, regulating heat and cold, micro organisms that can cause infection, chemicals and radioactive waves. Give that girl a round of applause.

It is only natural that we want the skin to remain thick so that it can do its job properly. Hyaluronic acid, water, vitamins and minerals are some buzz words that provide both moisture and hydration for the skin. We want the skin to keep its moisture and hydration and the best way to prevent pre-mature aging is to limit direct exposure to the sun without proper skincare products . The sun's UV rays damages your elastin and as you age you lose collagen anyway.

Don't let aging skin get you! It can start as young as 25! So right now get your hydration in water and in high water content foods. Eat citrus and berries if you can and if you are not plant based fish and shellfish have marine collagen which is easily absorbed in the body. If you love tropical fruit hooray! These fruits have a High Vitamin C content which is a key player in the production of pro-collagen.
